Navalny supporters arrested in worldwide day of protests
Several Russian activists were detained on Sunday as part of a worldwide day of protests called "Putin the Murderer" on the third anniversary of the poisoning of their jailed leader Aleksei Navalny, broadcasted by EFE and Agerpres.
The protests were organised by Navalny's team, which accuses Putin of ordering the poisoning in 2020. Police arrested several people who had organised individual pickets in Moscow, including on Red Square, and in St Petersburg.
One of the banners read, "Freedom for Navalny. No to war."
Navalny's team has already called for a worldwide day of protest in June to coincide with the opposition politician's 47th birthday.
After being treated for several months in a German clinic, Navalny returned to Russia in early 2021 and was immediately arrested, jailed and sentenced to eight years in prison for alleged fraud.
On 4 August, Navalny was sentenced to a further 19 years in prison for extremism, a sentence harshly criticised by the US, the EU and the UN.
The European Union (EU) on Sunday called again, three years after the case, for an impartial investigation into the poisoning of Navalny.
