Russia strikes NATO border city, explosions heard in Ismail (digi24.ro)
Russian forces struck the Ukrainian port city of Ismail, just 20 kilometres from the Romanian border, on Tuesday, causing explosions and destroying several grain warehouses, according to local media reports.
The attacks come after Russia pulled out of a deal to allow grain exports from Ukraine through the Black Sea, a move that has raised concerns about a global food shortage.
The head of the Odessa Region Military Administration, Oleg Kiper, said that the Russian strikes caused a fire in a production and transshipment facility, but that it had been extinguished. He added that Ukrainian air defences shot down nine Russian drones during the attack.
The Ukrainian military published photos showing piles of burnt grain in the warehouse.
The attacks on Ismail are the latest in a series of Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports on the Danube River. The strikes have raised concerns about the safety of shipping in the region and the security of food supplies from Ukraine.
