Ukrainian president hails independence, honours Moldovan soldier
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has hailed Ukraine's independence on its 32nd anniversary, paying tribute to a Moldovan-born soldier who was executed by Russian mercenaries for refusing to surrender.
In a video message, Zelensky spoke from behind a mural of Olexandr Matsevschi, who was born in Chisinau, Moldova, in 1980. Matsevschi moved to Ukraine with his family in 2008 and settled in the city of Nizhyn. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he volunteered to defend the Chernihiv region.
Russian forces published a video of Matsevschi's execution. The video shows the unarmed soldier being shot by Russian soldiers after he refused to surrender and shouted "Glory to Ukraine!"
Zelensky posthumously awarded Matsevschi the title of "Hero of Ukraine."
"Today we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of our independence - the independence of Ukraine," Zelensky said. "A holiday for free people. A holiday for strong people. A holiday for worthy people. A holiday for equal people. For Ukrainian men and women. For all throughout our country. This is a value for each of us and this is what we are fighting for. And everyone is important in this fight, because this fight is for something that is important for everyone. An independent Ukraine. Happy Independence Day, Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!"
