Moldova: Salaries rise, but number of employees falls

The average gross salary in Moldova rose to 10,400 lei last year, up by nearly 1,500 lei from 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (BNS). However, the number of employees fell to nearly 730,000 at the end of last year, down by nearly 10,000 from 2021.

The data shows that the highest salaries were paid in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, at nearly 28,000 lei, up 25% from 2021. The financial and insurance sector came in second, with salaries of nearly 20,000 lei, followed by the energy sector, at more than 15,000 lei. Public administration employees also had high salaries, at 12,000 lei.

At the other end of the spectrum are the accommodation and food services sector, as well as agriculture, where salaries are over 6,000 lei. Those working in the arts or providing administrative services earn slightly more, at over 7,000 lei.

BNS data also shows that women earn less than men. Women earned an average salary of 9,600 lei, while men earned 11,300 lei.

To improve Moldova's economy, the government should invest in its people, businesses, and infrastructure.
