Wildfires rage in Greece as Spain hit by storm
A powerful storm has hit several regions of Spain, leaving several people injured and infrastructure damaged. A cruise ship broke loose from the dock and collided with an oil tanker due to strong winds and waves of up to four metres. Several people suffered minor injuries. The nightmare on board lasted about two hours. Meanwhile, wildfires continue to burn out of control in northeastern Greece. Firefighters are battling the flames, and authorities say the fire could spread to even larger areas in the coming period.
A state of emergency has been declared in the Balearic Islands, and record rainfall fell in Barcelona, leaving behind large amounts of water. Authorities are urging people to avoid flooded roads.
Images posted on social media show debris from a ship that broke loose from the shore floating in the sea. A passenger also said that due to the rain and strong winds, nothing could be seen through the windows.
“If you park your car in the wrong place, it could collapse.”;
“It started to rain heavily. In a short time, a large amount of water had accumulated.”
“Thanks to the bridge, the car did not manage to get into the sea. The amount of water is very large, and the current is strong. Please avoid crossing flooded roads.”
The storm also ripped off several roofs.
Meanwhile, wildfires in northeastern Greece continue to wreak havoc. The conditions facing firefighters are very difficult, and there is currently no hope of containing the fires. In addition, meteorologists expect the winds to change direction later today, and the flames could spread to even larger areas. We note that approximately 74,000 hectares have already been devastated in northeastern Greece. The European Commission has announced that this is the largest individual forest fire in the history of the European Union.
