Romania's president: EU accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine are top priority
Romania will continue to support Moldova with unprecedented financial, technical, and political assistance, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said at an event to welcome the heads of Romania's diplomatic missions abroad. Iohannis also stressed that Moldova is affected by the war in Ukraine and reiterated Romania's multidimensional support for Ukraine. A priority at the moment, according to Iohannis, is opening EU accession negotiations for Moldova and Ukraine.
“We will continue to support Ukraine in a multidimensional and comprehensive way for as long as necessary,” Iohannis said.
“At the same time, we will continue to be alongside Moldova, which has been gravely affected by the war, with unprecedented financial assistance, expertise, and political support, in building an irreversible European path, but also in building a safe and prosperous state for all its citizens.”
“The priority at the moment is to obtain the political decision to open EU accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine.”
“Both countries need to maintain the EU's commitment and strong support for their European future.”
“At the same time, it is our duty, as Romania, to continue to be a true provider of security and prosperity in the region, so that the Black Sea can become a region in which peace and prosperity can no longer be subject to any threat,” Iohannis said.
Iohannis added that it is Romania's duty to continue to be a true provider of security and prosperity in the region, so that the Black Sea can become a “region in which peace and prosperity can no longer be subject to any threat,” according to Agerpres.
Iohannis said that at the summit of the Three Seas Initiative (I3M) to be held on September 6 in Bucharest, the expansion of the platform with a new participating state, Greece, and the granting of associated participating status to Ukraine and Moldova are being considered.
"In the geopolitical context created by the war in Ukraine, the Initiative has gained in relevance and I believe that it must become an even more important platform in consolidating regional and European resilience. At the Summit on September 6, Romania has a number of objectives, among which I mention the reaffirmation of the role of the Initiative in promoting economic growth and strategic interconnections, including through the consolidation and refinement of the Initiative's tools, and the redefinition of the Initiative's relationship with its geopolitically reconfigured neighborhood. Without anticipating the decisions that will be taken at the Summit, the expansion of the Initiative with a new participating state, Greece, is also being considered, respectively the granting of associated participating status to Ukraine and Moldova,” Iohannis said.

EU accession and deepening of the strategic partnership with Romania are among the objectives set by Moldovan President Maia Sandu for the diplomatic corps of the Republic of Moldova, gathered in Chisinau on August 16.
The Republic of Moldova has achieved “remarkable” achievements in the process of European integration with unprecedented hybrid pressures and the relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova is a priority for the authorities in Bucharest, said Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu, at the meeting of ambassadors in Chisinau.
