Georgian President faces impeachment over unapproved trips
The ruling Georgian Dream party has announced that it will begin impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zurabishvili, a pro-European leader. The move comes after Zurabishvili visited Germany and Belgium without the government's permission, according to Interpress.
Irakli Kobahidze, the leader of the Georgian Dream party, said that Zurabishvili had violated the country's constitution by making the trips. He said that the government had banned Zurabishvili from traveling to Germany, Ukraine, Switzerland, Poland, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates.
Zurabishivili has not directly responded to the impeachment threat. However, she posted a photo of herself on Instagram smiling on a train, suggesting that she is unfazed by the controversy.
It is unlikely that the impeachment effort will succeed. The Georgian Dream party holds a simple majority in parliament, and it would need the support of the opposition to remove Zurabishvili from office.
Zurabishivili was elected president of Georgia in 2018 with the support of the Georgian Dream party. However, she has since distanced herself from the party, accusing it of being pro-Russian and not committed to Georgia's membership in the European Union and NATO.
