Moldova PM calls Gazprom debt 'non-existent'

Dorin Recean, Moldova's prime minister, has said that the country will not pay a debt to Gazprom that he has called "non-existent."

Recean made the statement at the start of today's government meeting.

"Moldova does not intend to pay non-existent debts, and citizens of Moldova clearly do not have to pay the corresponding bills," Recean said.

Earlier today, Energy Minister Victor Parlicov held a press briefing to present the results of an external audit of Moldova's natural gas debt to Gazprom.

Parlicov said that Moldova could pay Gazprom $8.6 million of the $709 million debt owed by the right-bank of the Dniester, which was the debt as of the end of March 2022. Auditors also said that most of the debt owed by Moldovagaz to Gazprom is not backed up by documentation.
