Moldova, Romania to sign energy security agreement
The government of Moldova will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Romania to implement projects to connect the two countries' natural gas and electricity networks.
This could include extending the Iași-Ungheni-Chișinău gas pipeline and building a 400-kilovolt overhead power line between Suceava and Bălți. On Wednesday, September 6, members of the Foreign Policy and European Integration Commission approved a consultative opinion for the start of negotiations on this matter.
According to a Parliament press release, the document aims to develop cooperation in the energy sector, as well as advance or launch investment projects in the electricity and natural gas sectors. As a result, the energy security of Moldova, Romania, and the entire region will be strengthened. Another objective is to diversify sources and routes of supply for natural gas and electricity.
The Memorandum of Understanding, which will be signed between Romania and Moldova, will include a number of actions, including examining the possibility of extending the Iași-Ungheni-Chișinău gas pipeline by building a new pipeline - the Chișinău Belt. This objective could be achieved by 2031.
The document also aims to implement strategic projects, such as the 400-kilovolt overhead power line between Suceava and Bălți, the expansion of the 400-kilovolt Suceava and Bălți substations, and the development of the existing 110-kilovolt Huși-Cioara electricity interconnection line.
The projects included in the Memorandum of Understanding will be implemented by the Ministry of Energy, with the support of the Consolidated Unit for the Implementation of Projects in the Energy Sector.
