Italy reaffirms support for Moldova's EU accession

The Italian Parliament has adopted two resolutions expressing support for Moldova's accession to the European Union. The announcement was made by the head of state on her Twitter account.

“We appreciate Italy's support for our journey to the EU and its commitment to improving bilateral relations,” the president's message said.

According to the document, in recent years, Moldova has repeatedly expressed its desire to join the European Union quickly, complying with the required standards and reaching a very high level of cooperation in various fields. In fact, the resolution also states that, since the early days of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, our country has assumed a position in line with the European Union's condemnation and has launched an internal process aimed at increasing its autonomy and independence.

“Italy and Moldova are also particularly linked by the presence in our region of a large Moldovan community - one of the most important in our country and the first community in the world with over 100,000 citizens - and by a strong presence of Italian investments in Moldova, which make Italy one of the country's main economic partners, the second in terms of number of companies registered and capital invested,” the document also states.

Therefore, Italy undertakes to reaffirm, in all European and international fora, its full support for the process of Moldova's accession to the European Union; to promote, including through bilateral agreements, a deeper cooperation of diplomatic relations with our country, including to support the reforms necessary for its accession and to encourage greater public and private investments in the country. Italian authorities also intend to develop, in particular, cooperation in the cultural, economic, and training fields between the two countries, including by leveraging and involving the Moldovan community present in Italy.

On June 23, Moldova marked one year since it received the status of candidate country for EU membership. The authorities hope that by the end of this year, the countries of the community bloc will approve the opening of accession negotiations.
