Romania increases security measures at borders after drone incident
The Romanian and Ukrainian defence chiefs discussed the incident involving the drone parts found on Romanian territory, the Romanian Ministry of Defense (MAPN) announced on Saturday.
The conversation between Romanian Chief of Defense General Daniel Petrescu and Ukrainian Chief of Defense General Valerii Zaluzhnyi focused on the situation created by the intensification of Russian attacks on Ukrainian Danube port infrastructure. The two military officials also discussed the incident involving the drone parts.
“General Daniel Petrescu conveyed that Romania strongly condemns the aggression war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, as well as the unjustified and illegal attacks carried out against Ukrainian infrastructure and the civilian population,” MAPN said in a statement. “He also reiterated the multidimensional support that Romania will provide Ukraine for as long as necessary.”
In this context, the head of defence informed his Ukrainian counterpart that he has ordered an increase in measures to strengthen the monitoring and security of Romania's airspace, the statement added.
Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr announced on Wednesday that the first indications that debris that could be associated with drone-type equipment had been found in Tulcea County were found only on Tuesday, around 6 p.m., and that the information provided to President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday that “no drone” had fallen in the country was correct at the time.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed on Wednesday that pieces of a Russian drone used in attacks against the Izmail port, located 250-300 metres across the Chilia arm, had been found on Romanian territory.
NATO has no indication that the drone parts found on Romanian territory were caused by a deliberate attack launched by Moscow against the country, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, Reuters reported.
In its most recent communication on Thursday, MAPN said that the latest series of Russian drone kamikaze attacks on Ukrainian ports on the Danube was monitored “in real time.”
