Maia Sandu, about the launch of accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova: We will find out the answer at the EU Council meeting
The Republic of Moldova enjoys the support of the EU states, but the authorities in Chisinau must make efforts to convince all the member states in order to make a positive decision for our country. President Maia Sandu told a television station from the Republic of Moldova that in December, the EU Council will announce its decision with reference to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine regarding the opening of accession negotiations.
"We will find out the answer in December, at the meeting of the Council of the European Union. In October, the European Commission will make public the evaluation report, the Government must this week send the updated information for this report", said Maia Sandu.
The Republic of Moldova has assumed "serious" commitments, the president claims, noting that they are focusing their efforts on activities to promote our country. At the same time, Maia Sandu mentioned that in this process there are states that easily support EU expansion and countries that "are not happy".
"We are in a good situation, we have a lot of support, but we have to convince all the member states and the European institutions and continue to discuss in order to have a positive decision", declared the head of state.
According to the president, the most important reform is in the field of justice. This, according to the head of state, must be credible, implemented according to procedures. Reform lasts because it is opposed by resistance within the system.
"Many people in the system don't agree with it, there are people who want to make decisions as they want, not as the law requires, to get bribes. This resistance creates impediments. We are in the process of cleaning up, we had to create mechanisms from scratch, external mechanisms. It took some time, we have to insist on the cleaning process", opined the president. Maia Sandu also said that the EU will decide to open negotiations for the Republic of Moldova together with Ukraine. The head of state welcomed the reforms promoted by Ukraine.
"The decision will be taken on both states and it will be the same approach. It is impressive that Ukraine manages to defend its citizens, to move on the counter-offensive and to promote reforms. It is important for us that Ukraine moves in this direction. It is important for Ukraine that the Republic of Moldova moves towards European integration", said Maia Sandu.
In June 2022, the European Council decided to grant the status of candidate countries for accession to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
The Chisinau authorities hope to open accession negotiations by the end of the year.
