Romanian Defense Ministry: Russian drones may have violated airspace near Galați
The Romanian Defense Ministry (MApN) said on Friday evening that it had detected groups of drones heading for Ukrainian territory near the border with Romania.
The ministry alerted air defence forces and notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, which activated a civil defence alert in the counties of Tulcea and Galați.
"In the night of September 29-30, Russian forces carried out a new series of attacks on targets in Ukraine. In the wake of the detection of groups of drones heading for Ukrainian territory near the Romanian border, the Romanian Ministry of Defense alerted air defence forces and notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, starting at 22:38, of the activation of civil defence measures in the counties of Tulcea and Galați," the MApN said in a statement.
According to the statement, the Romanian Army's radar surveillance system indicated a possible unauthorised penetration of Romanian airspace, with a signal detected on a trajectory towards the city of Galați.
As a result, forces from the ISU, Police, and Border Police were redirected to areas near the city of Galați where the radar signal was recorded.
According to Radio România Actualități, dozens of units from the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations resumed searches on Saturday morning in a field about 1 km from the exit of the city of Galați towards Brăila. Authorities are looking for fragments of drones that may have fallen overnight. The searches began overnight, after Galați residents received a RO-ALERT message, and a person called 112 and said that an object had fallen from the sky on a field near Galați.
As of this writing, ISU representatives have not found anything.
