EU Parliamentarians praise Moldova's progress on EU accession path

European Parliamentarians on Tuesday praised Moldova's progress on its EU accession path, saying the country has made significant strides in recent months.

"We are pleased to see that the Moldovan government and citizens are firmly committed to the path to democracy and Europe," said Ignacio Navarro Rios, Spain's secretary of state for the EU. "This is especially evident in the areas of energy and economy. Despite numerous challenges, Moldova has shown extraordinary solidarity with Ukraine."

"Moldova must be given the green light to open its accession file," said Romanian MEP Dragoș Tudorache. "This is a message that the institutions have sent this year, and it is a message that we will send again in this week's resolution."

"Russia has tried all tactics, and Moldova has defended itself every time," said German MEP Viola von Cramon. "The government is strong and is defending the future of the country. Every attempt by Russia to destabilise the country must be met with a clear response."

"Moldova is a candidate country for EU accession," said Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan. "The citizens of Moldova want to live like us in freedom and democracy. We MEPs must make it very clear that one day Moldova will always be part of the EU and that the citizens will have exactly the same rights as all citizens of the other EU member states."

"I congratulate all Moldovans, led by their courageous President Maia Sandu, for their progress on the road to the EU and declare my unhesitating support for their European path," said Polish MEP Anna Fotyga.

In April 2023, the European Parliament called for EU accession negotiations to begin by the end of 2023 if Moldova meets the nine recommendations of the European Commission for opening accession negotiations.
