President Sandu, at the CPE Summit in Spain: Russia is interfering in the elections
Maia Sandu participates on Thursday, October 5, in the third meeting of the European Political Community, hosted by the Spanish government in Granada. She is on a tour of the Iberian Peninsula to diplomatically promote the opening of accession negotiations to the European Union. In Lisbon, he obtained from his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo Sousa the support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova. In the CPE Summit, President Sandu spoke about the fact that Russia is trying to undermine the progress of the Republic of Moldova.
"The Republic of Moldova is in the front line of the fight for democracy. We are dealing with attempts by Russia and its satellites to undermine our state, and the progress we have made so far. Therefore, I call on the other leaders to fight together with Russia's interference in the elections, with disinformation and with everything that Russia does to undermine democracy", said Maia Sandu at the European Political Community Summit in Spain.
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have the support of the EU institutions for the opening of accession negotiations. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said in Granada that the talks must begin. Moreover, the EU Parliament voted on Thursday, October 5, in Strasbourg, a resolution requesting the opening of negotiations with the Republic of Moldova.
Ukrainian President Zelensky is also participating in the summit. He raised the issue of Ukraine's winter shield. The Ukrainian leader expects Russia to repeat attacks on the power system. Last winter, Russian bombings caused power outages, including in the Republic of Moldova.
The European Political Community Summit is hosted by Spain, which holds the presidency of the European Council until December. Therefore, the Spanish mandate should decide the opening of accession negotiations between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union. On Friday, October 6, the Spanish presidency will also organize the informal meeting of heads of state and government from the European Union in Granada.
The Republic of Moldova hosted the second European Political Community Summit, in Bulboaca, on June 1, 2023. The first meeting took place in October 2022 in Prague, organized by the Czech presidency of the European Union.
