Biden, Macron, Scholz, Sunak and Meloni call on Iran 'not to expand conflict beyond Gaza'

US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday evening called on Iran "not to expand the conflict beyond Gaza" following the Hamas attack on Israel, AFP reports.

"We call on other extremist groups or any state that might try to take advantage of the situation, especially Iran, not to try to exploit this situation for other purposes, nor to expand the conflict beyond Gaza," reads a joint press release issued by the Elysée Palace.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had phone discussions with US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the subject of the Middle East on Monday evening.

"Germany and France stand with the Israeli people in these tragic moments," Emmanuel Macron said upon his arrival in Germany. Alongside him, Olaf Scholz insisted on the need to prevent a "deflagration in the region".

The European Commission announced on Monday that it will review its entire portfolio of aid to the Palestinians, worth 691 million euros, and immediately suspend all payments following the Hamas attack on Israel.
