EU leaders condemn Hamas attacks, reaffirm Israel's right to self-defence
The leaders of the 27 European Union member states condemned the "brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks" of Hamas against Israel in a joint statement published Sunday, as reported by AFP and Agerpres.
"The European Union strongly condemns Hamas and its terrorist attacks against Israel," the statement said. "We deeply regret the loss of life. Nothing can justify terrorism. We strongly insist on Israel's right to self-defence, in accordance with international humanitarian and international law."
The leaders also called for the protection of all civilians at all times, in accordance with international humanitarian law. They urged Hamas to release all hostages immediately and unconditionally.
"We remain committed to a lasting peace based on a two-state solution, doubling our efforts within the Middle East peace process," the statement said. "We underline the need for broad engagement with the legitimate Palestinian authorities, as well as with regional and international partners who could play a positive role in preventing a new escalation."
