Svetlana Tihanovskaia is a refugee in Lithuania and faces charges, including "high treason" and "conspiracy for the unconstitutional abuse of power."
Svetlana Tihanovskaia, who ran in the 2020 presidential election in Belarus in place of her imprisoned husband Sergei Tihanovski, drew crowds across the country during the election campaign, raising hopes for change, writes Digi24.
Forced into exile, she is now the image of democratic forces in Belarus and the enemy of a regime whose brutal abuses she tirelessly denounces. In an interview with AFP, Tihanovskaia called her trial a "farce" and a "personal vendetta" by Aleksandr Lukashenko against the one who threatened his position as dictator in 2020.
In the summer of 2020, Belarus was rocked by a historic protest movement against the controversial re-election of Lukashenko, who has been in power for nearly three decades.
