Moldovan president claims that the Republic of Moldova should become a member state of the EU "by the end of this decade"

The Government must make more efforts to fulfil the nine recommendations of the European Commission in order to initiate the next stage regarding the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU. The statement was made this evening by President Maia Sandu, on the show "In Context" on Moldova 1. The head of state says that European integration is our country's project and a unique chance to ensure the increase in the population's standard of living.

"A greater effort is needed on the part of the government, so as to ensure that all the conditions are met impeccably and on time, until the evaluation mission of the European Union comes. It is very important for us to start the discussions about the next stage which is the initiation of negotiations talks. My expectations are quite ambitious. I believe that we must become a member state by the end of this decade (...). European integration is the most important thing and we want to move quickly on this path. This will be the first topic with which I will start the coming year and I will call the government to report", said Maia Sandu.

Previously, the EU ambassador in Chisinau, Janis Mazeiks, stated that the Moldovan authorities take into account the recommendations formulated by the European Commission and are moving forward in this regard, noting that the EU's support for our country is very high. In October of next year, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova will present a report on the progress made by our country in order to join the EU.

Moldova 1 reports that the Republic of Moldova received the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union on June 23. In order to start the actual negotiations with a view to joining the EU, the Republic of Moldova must fulfill the 9 recommendations issued by the European Commission in June.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, the areas covered by these conditions are: justice, combating corruption and organized crime, deoligarization, public administration and public services reform, public finance management, strengthening the role of civil society in decision-making processes and protecting human rights.
