The Foreign Minister of Iran, surprise visit to the USA
The Foreign Minister of Iran, Hossein Amirabdollahian, made a surprise visit to the United States of America, in connection with the conflict in the Gaza Strip, reports dpa and Agerpres.
The source said Hossein Amirabdollahian arrived in New York on Wednesday evening, Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement saying it plans to support Palestinian interests at a UN meeting.
Israel responded with intense air raids on the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, to its bloody attack on October 7 in towns in southern Israel, near the border, which left around 1,400 dead, mostly civilians.
Israel and the US have warned the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah movement against opening a second front in this war. Iranian leaders welcomed Hamas attacks on Israel but denied direct complicity.
The UN General Assembly will address this file during a meeting that will take place on Thursday and Friday. Arab countries have proposed a text that could be put to a vote this week. This draft specifically calls for an "immediate ceasefire" and "unimpeded" humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip.
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council once again exposed its internal divisions on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, rejecting two draft resolutions on the war between Israel and Hamas, proposed by Russia and the US respectively. In less than two weeks, the Security Council rejected four draft resolutions.
