The Republic of Moldova is preparing its withdrawal from the CIS and will no longer pay membership fees

The Republic of Moldova will no longer pay CIS membership fees and is preparing to leave the organization. The decision comes following the denunciation of his status as a member of the community and the "banking sanctions applied to the Russian Federation", reports Moldova 1 TV.

Under a draft decision, signed by the Minister of Finance Petru Rotaru, the amount allocated for the payment of annual contributions to international organizations in 2023 is reduced by 16 million lei, from 66.5 million to 50.5 million lei. In the last four years, almost 35 million lei were transferred from the state budget, membership fees within the CSI and Community organizations.

The Government will exclude the Commonwealth of Independent States from the list of organizations to which it pays annual membership fees. The decision follows the denunciation of his membership in community organizations and the "banking sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation"*.

"At the beginning of 2023, the authorities started an inventory process of the treaties concluded within the Commonwealth of Independent States, each agreement being examined separately, in the context of the opportunity to keep the membership of the CIS. It is a complex and thorough process, and the final decision is taken by the authorities depending on the relevance of the documents for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, all the denounced agreements do not produce benefits and are useless for the citizens and institutions of our country", revealed, in a press conference, the spokesperson of the Government, Daniel Vodă.

Against the background of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine, the authorities in Chisinau announced that the Republic of Moldova will gradually withdraw from the CIS, and so far several signed agreements have been denounced. In July, the Parliament voted to withdraw the Republic of Moldova from the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.

It should be noted that CIS membership costs the Republic of Moldova millions of lei. Only in 2023, about 9 million lei were provided for various organizations within the CIS, the largest part of the amount (5.8 million lei) - for the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS.
