Maia Sandu, in Kiev: "Another wave of EU expansion represents an investment in the continent's security"

The expansion of the European Union would mean proof of the Union's unwavering commitment to peace, and the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are determined to work hard to join the EU bloc. The statement was made by Maia Sandu in Kiev, during a press conference held alongside her Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

The Head of State mentioned that joining the EU is equally important for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. In Maia Sandu's opinion, this will strengthen the democratic progress of Moldovans and Ukrainians and at the same time will underline the continent's commitment to peace, security and solidarity.

"Another wave of EU expansion represents an investment in the continent's security and a proof of the Union's unwavering commitment to peace - the very foundation on which the EU was built," declared the President of the Republic of Moldova.

Maia Sandu said that the Republic of Moldova is reforming to prepare to be a member of the European Union, referring to the justice reform and the fight against corruption. Also, the leader from Chisinau mentioned that the European Commission's report on EU enlargement appreciated the important results that our country has already achieved.

Maia Sandu called on all EU member states to unanimously support the opening of EU accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine at next month's European Council in Brussels.

"When it comes to EU enlargement, two things are more important than ever: unity and speed. In the face of Russia's divide-and-conquer strategy, our unity is our strongest defense. We must act with one voice, show that our collective will is unshakable", declared the president.

In the end, the head of state urged the entire free world and all countries that want their borders to be respected "to continue supporting Ukraine. As long as it takes. Until victory. There is no other way", concluded Maia Sandu.

We remind that November 21 is the Day of Dignity and Freedom in Ukraine, commemorating the Euromaidan protests in Kyiv that began on November 21, 2013 against former President Viktor Yanukovych, who refused at the last moment to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union.

For the second consecutive year, the Day of Dignity and Freedom is marked against the background of the large-scale invasion of Russia, which began on February 24, 2022.
