Romania is modernizing a railway segment that will connect with the Republic of Moldova
The Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) proposes investments of 1.83 billion lei, including VAT, for the rehabilitation of the Dărmanesti - Vicșani - Frontiera railway line, which takes over international freight and passenger rail traffic from Ukraine and connects with the Rhine-Danube Corridor with the countries of South-Eastern Europe and the countries of North-Eastern Europe (Republic of Moldova, Ukraine), announces the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The railway line is part of the 500 Bucharest Nord – Vicșani Frontieră Highway. Currently, due to the poor condition of the railway infrastructure and superstructure, there are speed limits for the movement of passenger and freight trains. Thus, on some sections, international freight trains are limited to speeds between 22 km/h and 45 km/h. Following the rehabilitation of this railway segment, it is proposed to improve the parameters of the railway infrastructure to increase the maximum traffic speed up to 120 km/h for passenger trains and, respectively, to a minimum of 100 km/h for freight trains. The investments lasting 36 months will be made from external non-refundable funds, from the state budget through the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and from the own revenues of the National Railway Company "C.F.R." S.A., as well as from other legally established sources, within the limits of the amounts approved annually for this purpose, according to the public investment programs approved in line with the law.
