"As a result, crossing the border between Finland and Russia will only be possible through border crossing points located in international airports and seaports in Finland during the period of 24.11-23.12.2023," the Moldovan Ministry for Foreign Affairs and European Integration said in a statement.

The country has seen a sharp increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving from Russia in recent months, with many of them coming from countries in the Middle East and Africa.

The closure of the border is expected to have a significant impact on trade and travel between Finland and Russia. The two countries share a 1,340-kilometre border, making it a major trade route.
