New online scam uses fake profiles, videos to extort money
Police in Moldova are warning citizens about a new form of online scam that is spreading. Scammers are creating fake profiles and distributing doctored videos featuring government officials and bank representatives, according to a police statement.
"Cybercriminals are abusing the image and logos of institutions to urge people to register on suspicious links," the statement said. "Later, users are pressured to invest large sums of money in a so-called investment platform in order to receive dividends, which is completely false."
The General Inspectorate of Police said that these are criminal acts of extortion of financial means and fraud.
Citizens are urged to ignore these posts with dubious content, not to access unknown links, and to report cases to the police.
