Sweden extends support for Dniester River sustainable management

Sweden has prolonged its financial, US$ 1.2 million, backing for the initiative "Supporting the Authorities of the Republic of Moldova in the Sustainable Management of the Dniester River," led by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The funding adjustment was formalised on December 4, 2023, through a joint agreement signed by Katarina Fried, Ambassador of Sweden to the Republic of Moldova, and Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova.

According to the UNDP, the additional funding aims to assist national authorities in aligning the legal framework for water resource management with EU standards. It will enhance capabilities for monitoring water quality and flow within the Dniester River basin district. The funding will also support public communication, awareness initiatives on river management, and foster collaboration between both banks of the Dniester on aspects impacting the river ecosystem.

Katarina Fried, the Ambassador of Sweden to the Republic of Moldova, emphasised the significance of the Dniester River for Moldova's economic, social, and environmental well-being. She stated, "It is essential to conserve and manage our limited natural resources efficiently to promote access to a healthy and clean environment for people. Through joint efforts for the sustainable management of the Dniester River, Moldova will achieve good water quality aligned with EU requirements."

Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova, highlighted the strategic importance of the Dniester River, covering 70% of the country's water consumption needs. She expressed gratitude for Sweden's partnership, contributing to enhancing environmental and social conditions in the Dniester River basin district.

The Dniester River Basin District Committee will receive continued support for capacity development, including an inventory of hydraulic infrastructure. Training for water reservoir owners in the Dniester River basin will focus on careful water body management and compliance with legal requirements.

Swedish funding will evaluate the capacities of Moldovan laboratories for chemical substance analysis, identifying priorities for development. Additionally, the project aims to enhance hydrological monitoring with the acquisition of two automatic water level monitoring stations.

The initiative has already led to the harmonisation of Moldova's Law on Water with EU legislation, marking a significant milestone in the project's impact on Moldova's environmental sustainability.
