Bogdan Aurescu: The meeting of foreign ministers is "an expression of allied solidarity with the eastern flank

The Republic of Moldova will participate for the first time, formally, in the meeting of foreign ministers of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), which will take place in Bucharest on the 29 and November 30.

The main topics discussed during the meetings will be the aid to Ukraine and the review of the strategy towards China. This is the most important NATO meeting since the Madrid Summit.

The foreign ministers of the NATO member states meet in Bucharest in the context where Ukraine needs support as insisted by Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO.

"President Putin is failing in Romania and responding with more brutality, with waves of deliberate missile attacks on cities and civilian infrastructure depriving Ukrainians of heat, light and food," Jens Stoltenberg noted.

From Romania's perspective, the meeting of foreign ministers is "an expression of allied solidarity with the eastern flank".

"A very relevant meeting that confirms the role and profile of Romania in NATO, at the same time indicates the strategic importance of the Black Sea for Euro-Atlantic security, therefore also for Romania", mentioned the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Bogdan Aurescu,

In an interview for Agerpres.ro, the head of diplomacy from Bucharest also spoke about the participation of the Republic of Moldova, for the first time, within such a format. "We have already repeatedly witnessed extensive disruptions in electricity supplies following attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. There have also been flagrant violations of airspace by Russian cruise missiles, which are in fact violations of the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova. The discussions during the Ministerial Meeting will primarily aim at increasing the resilience of the NATO partner states in our immediate vicinity", said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Bogdan Aurescu.

In Romania, at the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting, the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will also participate "how the challenge of China will be addressed is another file to which the NATO ministry will have to outline a response. Beijing is ramping up its military modernization, increasing its presence from the Baltic Sea to the Western Balkans as it seeks to gain control of critical infrastructure.

The NATO Ministerial in Bucharest takes place exactly 20 years after NATO invited Romania to join it.
