Kalinin summoned over alleged pro-Russian military unit formation

Moldovan politician Alexandr Kalinin has been summoned for questioning by the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) following his announcement about the formation of a military unit that would reportedly fight in Ukraine and potentially in Moldova.

Kalinin's announcement came after Moldovan President Maia Sandu revoked his citizenship. The pro-Kremlin politician has been a vocal supporter of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has organised support campaigns for Russian soldiers and pro-Russian military groups in occupied Ukrainian territories.

In an interview with Ria Novosti, Kalinin stated, "We have decided to create an international unit, the 'Nistru - Dimitrie Cantemir Detachment.' We are creating a unit that will train those citizens who want to defend their country but lack the skills and knowledge. We already have a commander for our subdivision, so I am confident that we will recruit several thousand people in the shortest possible time."

The PCCOCS has opened an investigation into the announcement and is expected to question Kalinin regarding his involvement in forming the military unit. Kalinin is also being investigated in another criminal case in Chisinau for war propaganda.

In Moldova, war propaganda is punishable by up to six years in prison, and incitement to violence on the basis of prejudice is punishable by up to three years in prison.
