Romania slams Russia's Moldovan election interference

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) has publicly condemned the Russian Federation's repeated attempts to interfere in democratic processes, particularly the recent incident involving the November 2023 Moldovan local elections.

"Romania expresses concern about the growing use of cyber operations in an electoral context, amplified by interference in the information space, with the aim of undermining democratic processes and trust in authorities," stated the MAE in a press release.

The Ministry further highlighted the "unacceptable" nature of these actions and expressed particular concern over their "scale and complexity."

This statement comes in conjunction with Romania aligning itself with the United Kingdom in denouncing Russia's interference, further demonstrating its commitment to upholding democratic values in the region.

Furthermore, Romania advocated for the adoption of a European Union declaration regarding this issue, emphasising the importance of maintaining stability and preventing conflict through adherence to international norms of responsible behaviour in cyberspace.

"We underline the importance of fully respecting these norms, in order to maintain stability and prevent conflict," stressed representatives of the MAE.
