Baghdad attack: U.S. Embassy targeted, no casualties

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was targeted by two rocket salvos on Friday morning, October 27, 2023. No casualties were reported, according to a U.S. embassy spokesperson, quoted by Reuters.

The spokesperson attributed the attack to Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.

This attack marks the first reported rocket assault on the U.S. Embassy since mid-October 2023, when a series of attacks targeting U.S. forces at bases in Iraq and neighbouring Syria were launched by Iran-backed Muslim Shiite militias operating under the name Islamic Resistance in Iraq.

The group has linked these attacks, exceeding 70 in total, to Washington's support for Israel during the devastating conflict in Gaza.

"We reiterate our call to the Iraqi government," the embassy spokesperson stated, "as we have done on numerous occasions, to take all necessary steps to protect diplomatic personnel, Coalition partners, and facilities."

Responding to the attack, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has instructed security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible. In a statement released by his office, he condemned the perpetrators as "undisciplined, lawless groups that in no way represent the will of the Iraqi people."

The Prime Minister further emphasised that undermining Iraq's stability and reputation through attacks on protected sites constitute acts of terrorism.
