Moldova takes step towards energy independence
Moldova and Romania have taken a major step towards energy independence and integration with the European Union by signing a memorandum of understanding on the development of strategic energy infrastructure projects.
The document, signed by Moldovan Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov and Romanian Minister of Energy Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, outlines a series of ambitious goals, including:
- Expanding the Iași-Ungheni gas pipeline: This critical project will help diversify Moldova's gas supply sources and reduce its dependence on Russia.
- Building new energy interconnections: These interconnections will allow Moldova to import and export electricity, further enhancing its energy security.
- Creating a functional energy market: The memorandum paves the way for the creation of a unified energy market in Moldova, based on European Union standards.
"If previously Moldova was a kind of periphery of the former Soviet energy system, now we are anchored in both systems and we are no longer on the periphery," said Parlicov. "This is just the beginning, because beyond the flow of electrons, it matters how it is done, what are the conditions, requirements, and rules for trading energy. This is precisely what we are focusing on when signing this memorandum."
Burduja echoed Parlicov's sentiments, emphasizing Romania's commitment to supporting Moldova's energy goals. "Today we continue to lay the foundation stones of an energy bridge," he stated. "Energy is the heart of the economy and it can be used as a blackmail weapon, as Russia has used it for many years, or as an economic weapon. Energy means living conditions for all citizens and a better life and the competitiveness of the economic environment. Energy must be safe first and foremost."
The memorandum also includes provisions for:
- Romania to assist Moldova in developing investment plans for the energy sector.
- Creating a common electricity market between Moldova and Romania.
- Integrating Moldova into the European Union's internal electricity market.
The signing of this memorandum represents a significant milestone in the relationship between Moldova and Romania. It is a clear demonstration of their commitment to working together to achieve energy security and independence
