The European Commission has recommended starting negotiations with both nations, citing their fulfilment of the necessary criteria. However, Hungary has expressed opposition to Ukraine's candidacy due to concerns regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority within its borders.

In an attempt to appease Hungary, Ukraine recently adopted amendments to its legislation on minority rights. Nevertheless, it remains unclear if these concessions will be enough to secure Hungary's support and prevent a veto.

Granting Ukraine accession talks would represent a significant symbolic victory for the country amidst its ongoing struggle against the Russian invasion. This would bolster Ukraine's morale and strengthen its aspirations for future EU membership.
