Moldova weights lifting SoE following legislative reforms
The Moldovan Parliament is exploring the possibility of lifting the state of emergency (SoE) upon the implementation of specific legislative modifications. These amendments would empower authorities to take decisive action within a robust legal framework, as reported by Radio Moldova.
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu acknowledged that legal solutions already exist for several decisions made by the National Security and Defense Council (CSN), including the closure of twelve television stations and the banning of political parties with ties to criminal organisations.
"We are experiencing fatigue from continuously crafting legal instruments to enable swift action within legal boundaries," Grosu stated. "Therefore, we will revise the legislation. However, before we proceed, the Venice Commission will hold a public meeting with parliamentarians. During this meeting, the commission will present its opinion on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Code, particularly regarding the exclusion of criminal groups from the electoral process."
Previously, Interior Minister Adrian Efros reassured Radio Moldova that the SoE would not be extended unless the situation significantly deteriorated. The most recent extension, for a period of 30 days, began on December 1st. The SoE was initially imposed in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has been periodically extended since.
