The European Council is poised to approve the opening of membership negotiations with both Moldova and Ukraine at its upcoming summit in Brussels, according to a statement by Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan.

Muresan, a prominent member of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, expressed confidence in the outcome of the summit, citing widespread support for both countries' accession bids among EU member states and the European Parliament.

"There exists no opposition within the European Union to the initiation of membership negotiations with Moldova," Muresan stated in a recent interview. "During the October vote, over 480 Members of the European Parliament voiced their support, representing 80% of the chamber. This overwhelming support demonstrates the positive attitude towards Moldova's aspirations."

While Hungary has yet to formally announce its endorsement of Ukraine's candidacy, Muresan expressed optimism that a positive decision is imminent.

"Hungary's economic interests are closely tied to the European Union, with the majority of its foreign trade conducted within the bloc," Muresan remarked. "Therefore, isolating itself from the EU would not be a beneficial course of action. It is highly likely that Hungary will announce its support for Ukraine by Thursday."

Muresan further stressed the importance of a positive outcome at the December summit, emphasising that a delay would only serve to prolong the negotiation process under potentially less favourable circumstances.

"The European Council's decision will have a profound impact on the future of both Moldova and Ukraine," Muresan concluded. "We are confident that the Council will recognize the significant progress made by both countries and approve the opening of membership negotiations, marking a historic step towards their integration into the European Union."
