European Parliament asks the EU Council to start accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine

The European Parliament asks the European Council to decide, during the December 14-15 meeting, the start of accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. A resolution was adopted today with a large majority: 468 MPs voted in favor, 99 were against and 58 MPs abstained. The announcement was made by MEP Siegfried Muresan, on his Facebook page.

The official said that this resolution is a clear support from MEPs from all corners of the EU for the start of accession negotiations with the two countries.

"We, the European Parliament, were the first European institution to request the start of accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine by the end of the year. We requested this in a resolution initiated by me and voted in October by the plenary of the Parliament, and now we reconfirm this request in today's resolution. We believe that the two countries are ready for the start of accession negotiations, which was confirmed by the European Commission Report from November, which endorsed the start of negotiations", said Mureșan.

According to the deputy, the fundamental security interest of the European Union is to support the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

"The security of the EU depends on how safe and stable the countries in our neighborhood are. The more stable and reformed Moldova and Ukraine are, the safer we are, inside the EU. And the process of accession to the European Union is the best instrument through which a state in the EU's neighborhood can be reformed and modernized," the official said.

The European Parliament believes that the Enlargement Policy is to the benefit of all European citizens. This has been confirmed by previous enlargement stages that have contributed to the economic development of the European Union, strengthened the European Union's internal market and the EU's position globally.
