The General Affairs Council welcomes the "substantial" progress of the Republic of Moldova in fulfilling its objectives of candidate
The General Affairs Council (GAC) welcomes the "substantial" progress that the Republic of Moldova has made in fulfilling the objectives underlying its candidate status, despite the challenges generated by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and hybrid actions against Moldova itself. The subject of EU enlargement was discussed in Brussels on December 12.
"Accession negotiations are the best tool we have to help our neighboring countries, especially the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, to become safer, more stable, to reform and to modernize, to approach European standards and to adopt and to implement European legislation in the national one", said Siegfried Mureșan, today, in the plenary of the European Parliament.
The MEP said that the start of accession negotiations is not only in the interest of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, but also in the interest of Romania and, above all, of the European Union.
"Despite the challenges faced by the two states, both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have managed to implement the recommendations made by the European Commission and have made remarkable progress in terms of their European integration. Now is the time to show them our support, of the European Union, and to start accession negotiations", the official concluded.
We remind that between December 14-15, the European Council will take a decision regarding the opening of the EU accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova.
