European Council Summit // Roberta Metsola: The Republic of Moldova worked very well. It will be a decision based on merit and respect
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, encourages the start of EU accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. During a press conference, the head of the European Parliament mentioned that our country and Ukraine are in difficult circumstances, and the next step is to start accession negotiations. Metsola said that the Republic of Moldova worked very well on reforms, and the decision to be taken by the European Council is based on merit and respect.
"These countries are in difficult circumstances and the next step is to open accession negotiations. Such a decision will not be made out of political positions or in an accelerated regime, but will be a decision based on merit and respect. Many countries still went through these steps to access the EU and we know how important they are, as well as the signal we send to people, especially those in a situation of war", said Roberta Metsola.
The official stated that the position of the European Parliament is clear: the expansion of the European Union will strengthen the situation on the continent.
“It is an investment in peace, it is an investment in security and it will benefit society. But on the other hand, we have to see if we are ready for it and I hope that there will be a vote on this in the European Council. We, as the Parliament, insist that the discussions be accelerated on the subject of the future of the European Union", she said.
At the same time, Metsola said that she is looking forward to having Moldovan colleagues in the European Parliament.
"You have done something unimaginable to implement the reforms and step by step, I am sure you will continue to do so. So, I look forward to when we can sit with our Moldovan colleagues in the European Parliament and around the European Council. This weekend's decision will give us the opportunity to move to the next step", concluded Metsola.
We remind you that the European Council is going to decide whether to give the green light to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to start accession negotiations to the European Union. The two countries applied for EU membership in 2022 and got a candidate country status.
