This timely bridge loan aims to address immediate needs and pave the way for a larger €50 billion aid package, solidifying the EU's commitment to the war-torn nation.

"Our support to Ukraine is unshakable," declared European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, her voice resolute at a press conference following the EU summit in Brussels. "We stand with the Ukrainian people in their fight for democracy and freedom, and we will continue to play our part in building a modern and prosperous Ukraine."

This €1.5 billion tranche serves as a lifeline, providing Ukraine with critical financial resources as it navigates the harsh realities of winter and prepares for the war's second year. The funds will be allocated within the framework of existing agreements, ensuring swift and efficient delivery to where they're needed most.

The larger €50 billion package remains under discussion, with EU member states working towards finalising the details. Commission officials hope to secure an agreement at a summit slated for late January or early February 2024. This delay underscores the complexities involved in such a substantial financial commitment, but also reflects the EU's resolve to provide comprehensive and sustained support to Ukraine.
