Ukrainian crossing scam foiled: Moldova apprehends five

In a decisive blow to human smuggling operations, Moldovan Border Police have arrested a Moldovan national suspected of facilitating the illegal entry of four Ukrainian citizens into the country, as reported by Border Police.

The apprehension, made on the evening of December 14th, 2023, at the entrance to the city of Edinet, marks a significant victory in safeguarding national security and upholding border integrity.

The investigation, initiated upon receiving intelligence of a potential smuggling ring, revealed the suspect's involvement in a larger network orchestrating illegal crossings for Ukrainian men. According to official sources, the scheme targeted individuals willing to pay $5,000 each for clandestine passage into Moldova. The suspect, along with unidentified accomplices from Moldova and Ukraine, allegedly facilitated the illegal entry by picking up the individuals near the border and transporting them within Moldovan territory.

"The suspect's activity was closely monitored from the border area," stated an official Border Police release. "Following confirmation of his involvement, he was apprehended in flagrante delicto at the entrance to Edinet. A subsequent inspection of his vehicle revealed the presence of the four foreign citizens who had been illegally transported."
