Charles Michel announces an extraordinary EU summit for 1 February

The European Union will hold an extraordinary summit on February 1 in an attempt to agree on the revision of its multi-year budget, including funds for Ukraine, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, said on Monday, reports Reuters and Agerpres.

EU leaders agreed last week to open accession negotiations with Ukraine, but failed to agree on a 50 billion euro financial package for Kiev due to opposition from Hungary.

"I understood on Thursday and Friday that a little more time is needed with Hungary so that a unanimous decision is taken, which is necessary for an agreement on the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework," Michel said in a press conference together with the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

Michel said that, in addition to the funds for Ukraine, the EU also proposes additional funding for the issue of migration, for compensation in the event of natural disasters, as well as for security and defense.

Belgium will take over the six-month presidency of the EU Council from Spain on January 1.
