Moldova assembles strategic team for EU accession talks
Moldova's path toward EU membership took a significant step forward as President Maia Sandu announced the government's plan to establish a dedicated negotiating team.
Emphasizing the crucial nature of this phase, Sandu stressed the need for strong leadership and expertise, placing top officials at the helm.
"The government, alongside the Chancellery, will propose the structure of the team, identifying specific individuals with the necessary skills and experience," President Sandu stated on PRO TV's "În Profunzime." "This process demands dedicated resources and unwavering commitment from all involved."
Acknowledging the inherent complexity of EU accession, Sandu underscored the importance of international collaboration, particularly Romania's invaluable contribution. Already, key Romanian figures with direct experience in their own nation's accession journey are offering crucial guidance in a consultative capacity.
"These individuals are acting as advisors," elaborated Sandu. "Their expertise will prove invaluable in navigating the intricacies of alignment and reform. Understanding the necessary adjustments, identifying potential synergies, and leveraging existing translated legislation are all critical steps in charting our course forward."
The recent green light from the European Council for accession negotiations was met with elation by President Sandu and the Moldovan public. This swift advancement translates to valuable time gained and renewed momentum for the integration process.
"Naturally, I was delighted," admitted Sandu. "A faster pace is always preferable, allowing us to capitalise on this pivotal moment and initiate work promptly. Positive news is especially welcome as we approach the end-of-year festivities. I have shared this excitement with my colleagues in government and parliament, and yesterday, I had the opportunity to celebrate with the citizens who gathered at the Presidential residence."
The immediate road ahead involves a thorough "screening" process, meticulously assessing the compatibility of Moldovan legislation with the EU's legal framework. Once this comprehensive analysis is complete, detailed negotiations on the 33 chapters of the EU acquis will commence, marking a historic chapter in Moldova's ambition to join the European Union.
