Former Romanian finance chief takes reins of Moldovan Central Bank

Anca Dragu, former Romanian Minister of Finance and Senate President, officially assumed the governorship of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) on December 22nd.

Her appointment, swiftly approved by Parliament, marked a new chapter for the BNM following the controversy surrounding Octavian Armașu's dismissal the previous day.

Dragu outlined her priorities in an interview with TVR, highlighting the critical importance of "ensuring the BNM's independence and integrity. These are essential elements for a converging economy like Moldova's, crucial for attracting investor confidence."

The seasoned economist further alluded to early discussions with Moldovan authorities regarding the BNM's Supervisory Board, suggesting potential preparation for her current role. Her arrival is viewed with optimism by many, as her extensive experience and proven track record inspire hope for increased economic stability and progress towards EU integration.

However, challenges lie ahead. The recent controversy surrounding Armașu's removal due to his handling of the "Bank Fraud" case casts a shadow on the transition. Dragu will need to navigate a potentially delicate landscape, seeking to balance institutional transparency with upholding the BNM's autonomy.

Dragu's leadership and ability to address these challenges will significantly impact the BNM's future and, consequently, Moldova's economic stability and European aspirations.
