Moldova's Sandu eyes re-election, seeks EU referendum
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has opened the door to seeking a second term in the 2024 elections, while advocating for a public referendum on the country's future path towards European Union (EU) membership.
In a message marking three years since her 2020 victory, Sandu acknowledged progress made during her tenure, including maintaining peace, bolstering national independence, and launching EU accession talks. However, she stressed the need for continued efforts: "We still have important steps to take. I pledge to continue, if you will give me your trust for a new term in 2024."
While not an explicit declaration, this statement represents the first public indication of Sandu's potential re-election plans. Her focus on EU integration resonates with her previous campaign promises and aligns with the pro-Western sentiment prevalent in Moldova.
Further underscoring her commitment to EU inclusion, Sandu urged Parliament to initiate a national referendum on the issue this autumn: "Moldova's future is in the European family. It is necessary to say clearly - the whole country - which path we choose." This move could solidify public support for EU aspirations and bolster Sandu's position as a champion of this agenda.
Sandu's message comes at a critical juncture for Moldova. The nation grapples with ongoing economic and political challenges, while the ongoing war in Ukraine casts a long shadow over regional stability. Amidst these uncertainties, Sandu appears to be positioning herself as a reliable and pro-EU leader, seeking a renewed mandate to steer the country forward through these turbulent times.
