Moldova exempted from EU financial contributions: Historic agreement reached
In a significant development, the Republic of Moldova is set to be exempt from financial contributions to European Union programs.
During today's session, members of the Foreign Policy and European Integration Commission approved the advisory opinion for initiating negotiations and signing an Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the European Commission, as stated in a press release from the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
The document outlines that Moldova's financial contributions to EU programs will be suspended for the period 2021–2027. This proposal originates from the European Commission, taking into account the economic, financial, and political repercussions faced by Moldova following Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
The agreement also stipulates that future association agreements between the Republic of Moldova and EU programs can also be exempt from the country's financial contribution. The need to maintain the suspension will be evaluated annually by the European Commission based on information provided by the Government of the Republic of Moldova.
Currently, Moldova has several agreements with the European Union for participation in various thematic programs, including Fiscalis, Customs, Single Market Programme, EU4Health, LIFE, Horizon Europe, Union Civil Protection Mechanism, and Connecting Europe Facility. This allows Moldova to benefit from project funding across multiple domains.
