Romania edges into Schengen: Air & Sea access secured for March 2024
Romania has achieved a partial breakthrough in its quest for Schengen Area membership, securing access for air and sea travel as of March 2024, as reported by Agerpres.
This landmark agreement, reached through unanimous consent among EU member states, marks a significant step forward in the country's European integration.
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared the development a "long-awaited victory," noting the 13-year journey to this point. He highlighted the anticipated benefits for both citizens and businesses, including streamlined travel and enhanced trade opportunities. Ciolacu further expressed confidence in achieving full land border inclusion by 2024.
Senate President Nicolae Ciucă echoed the positive sentiment, stressing the bipartisan effort towards Schengen membership. He acknowledged the contributions of past and present administrations, particularly the liberal governments and current officials like President Iohannis, whose concerted efforts "paved the way for this critical advancement."
While emphasising the ongoing pursuit of full Schengen integration, Ciucă underlined the immediate advantages of partial entry. "The opening of air and sea borders represents a substantial leap forward, facilitating smoother travel and boosting economic connections within the European zone. We remain committed to securing full membership, including land borders, through continued diplomatic and technical negotiations."
The Ministry of Interior Affairs confirmed the agreement with Austria and Bulgaria, solidifying the March 2024 implementation date for air and sea travel. This partial accession marks a turning point for Romania, signalling its deeper integration into the European continent and paving the way for future economic and logistical synergies.
