Moldova celebrates EU negotiation launch, energy independence in 2023 review
Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, hailed the opening of EU accession talks as the crowning achievement of 2023 for the Republic of Moldova.
In an interview with Moldova 1, he further emphasised the country's escape from "energy blackmail" and a strengthened partnership with Europe.
Historic EU Step:
Grosu characterised the commencement of EU accession negotiations as a "major achievement" and a "recognition of the significant progress made by our country in recent years." He highlighted the June 23rd decision by the European Council, marking the culmination of Moldova's efforts to meet EU criteria.
Economic and Institutional Bolstering:
The appointment of a European governor to the National Bank of Moldova was another point of pride for Grosu. He saw this move as a testament to Moldova's commitment to economic reforms and bolstering the bank's independence. "The European Governor will be a guarantor of the National Bank's independence and will contribute to the implementation of economic policies that will ensure the country's financial stability," he stated.
Shifting Power Dynamics:
On the subject of Russia, Grosu declared Moldova's liberation from "the energy blackmail zone." He described Russia's past use of energy as a tool for pressure and Moldova's current success in securing alternative energy sources, fostering greater independence. Additionally, he noted a perceived shift in Russia's strategy, with a move away from influencing Moldova through public institutions and towards potential involvement with organised crime, though he did not elaborate further on this claim.
