Roam free: Moldova joins EU on mobile data & calls
Starting January 1, 2024, Moldovan citizens travelling to the European Union will enjoy significantly cheaper roaming charges, thanks to a new agreement with the EU.
This agreement removes roaming fees altogether for many users, marking a significant step towards closer integration between Moldova and the EU.
"I'm happy to announce that from today, Moldovans can talk to loved ones and access the internet in Europe at much lower prices," declared Nicu Popescu, Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. "This creates a more accessible and convenient connectivity experience for all."
Previously, Moldovan citizens faced high roaming charges when using their mobile phones in the EU. This often hindered communication and discouraged travel. Under the new agreement, however, charges will be capped at the same rates offered within Moldova. Users can also choose from various advantageous options based on their specific needs and travel plans.
The agreement covers all 30 EU member states and the European Economic Area (EEA), encompassing Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. This translates to over 450 million potential users, offering a significant boost to both personal and professional communication between Moldova and the EU.
The roaming agreement is one of several recent developments strengthening ties between Moldova and the EU. It follows a similar bilateral agreement with Romania and underscores the growing collaboration between the two regions.
