Moldova exits CIS Assembly: February 8th deadline set
Moldova's exit from the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is nearly complete, with February 8th earmarked as the official conclusion.
This timeline is outlined in a draft bill from the Ministry of Finance, currently undergoing public consultation.
"The payment of outstanding dues to the CIS Parliamentary Assembly is conditional on the finalised withdrawal process, happening by February 8th," emphasised the Ministry of Finance, underscoring the finality of the move. This payment, totaling roughly 6.5 million Moldovan lei (about $0.3 million), marks the end of the country's financial obligations to the organisation.
Moldova's decision to withdraw stemmed from a late 2023 government vote driven by the CIS's perceived close ties to Russia. With this disengagement, the 50 million lei previously allocated for CIS membership will be redirected towards dues for other international organisations, including the Council of Europe (9.5 million lei) and the United Nations Development Programme (4.6 million lei).
This financial reshuffling reflects Moldova's evolving geopolitical priorities and aligns with its stance on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The February 8th deadline signifies a definitive chapter closure in the country's relationship with the CIS, potentially paving the way for stronger alliances with other international bodies.
