Ukraine reels from Russian airstrikes: One dead, 24 injured
Relentless bombardment continued to plague Ukraine on Monday as Russian forces launched waves of airstrikes across the country.
At least one person was killed in Krivoy Rog, while over two dozen others, including five children, sustained injuries. Residential and industrial areas bore the brunt of the attacks, leaving scars on buildings and nerves.
The Dnipropetrovsk region faced particularly heavy bombardment, with Krivoi Rog and Novomoskovsk witnessing devastating consequences. A shopping centre, homes, administrative buildings, and gas stations were left damaged in the wake of the explosions.
"The shockwave was so strong," recounted one Krivoi Rog resident, still shaken. "If I had been in the bedroom, debris would have fallen on me. It's terrifying."
Similar fear gripped residents in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, where explosions rocked cityscapes and injured three and two people respectively.
"We were already prepared," said a Kharkiv resident, describing the harrowing experience. "The dogs and cats ran away immediately. We hid in the hallway, praying it would stop."
The Zaporizhzhia military administration confirmed five injuries and extensive damage to residential areas, though thankfully no direct hits on homes. The type of missile used remains unconfirmed, but speculation points towards the hypersonic Kinjal.
Amidst the devastation, a glimmer of hope emerged with Japan pledging $37 million in aid for Ukraine's air defence. President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude, highlighting the multifaceted support Japan has provided throughout the war.
"This is a true partnership," Zelenskyy declared, acknowledging Japan's leadership on the international stage and vital economic and humanitarian assistance.
As the war nears its second anniversary, the intensity of airstrikes from both sides appears to be escalating, casting a long shadow over the fragile hope for peace.
