Israeli offensive continues amidst Blinken's diplomatic efforts
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Tel Aviv on Monday, with a crucial mission to prevent the Gaza conflict from escalating into a regional conflagration, as reported by Reuters.
His visit comes in the wake of ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the militant group's attack on October 7th, which, according to Israeli reports, claimed approximately 1,200 lives.
Blinken, who conducted two days of discussions with Arab leaders to bring an end to the war, aimed to inform Israeli officials of the diplomatic efforts. The U.S. official emphasised the imperative for Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to intensify efforts in protecting civilians and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need. He stated, "The fight against Hamas will continue throughout the year."
The Israeli military, committed to ending Hamas dominance in Gaza and discouraging Iran-backed adversaries, faces increasing pressure from the U.S. and Arab leaders to de-escalate the assault. President Joe Biden, responding to protests during a visit to a historic church in South Carolina, mentioned working quietly to encourage Israel to reduce attacks and significantly withdraw from Gaza.
As the conflict takes a toll on both sides, with over 23,000 Palestinians killed, extensive destruction in Gaza, and a massive displacement of its 2.3 million inhabitants, a deepening humanitarian crisis unfolds. The recent killing of a top Hezbollah commander, an ally of Hamas, by Israel in southern Lebanon raises concerns of a potential expansion of the war.
Despite Israeli assurances of a more targeted war phase, there was no respite in the fighting on Monday, signalling the challenges in achieving a swift resolution. The situation remains tense, with the international community closely watching developments in the region.
